To make detailed backstories for my characters I've decided to create a world map with where each character lives and what their culture is like. I need to research Geography and how it affects culture, appearance and so on.
I am hoping this will help me design my characters by

How geography affects/influences appearance
I came across an articles on "How do different climates affect the physical appearance of humans" which I found to be an interesting read. I'm going to include some things I found interesting and thought I would help with designing characters too.

These articles explains that darker skin contains greater levels of melanin which protects the skin from sun burn and skin cancer. Darker skin with more melanin, is therefore, an adaptation in response to strong sunlight exposure as in the tropics. People with darker skin represent a lineage from ancestors who lived for many generations in sunny climates. Dark pigment in the eyes improves vision in bright light in the tropic.
On the opposite end, Lighter skin absorbs more of the available sunlight making it possible to synthesize enough Vitamin-D, which is is necessary for calcium absorption and metabolism. People whose ancestors have lived in climates such as in the polar areas for many generations have adapted to reduced sunlight by developing light-coloured skin.
Hair can be straight, wavy, curly or even frizzy and it is believed that these differences represent the climatic conditions to which the ancestors of different groups were exposed. For example, the frizzy, curly hair of the Bushmen is suitable for the dry semi-desert conditions because areas of the scalp are left exposed, and heat loss can take place.
Short, stocky builds are typical of humans living in cold climates. The reduced surface area compared to weight allows more body heat to be retained. A thin, long-limbed build is typical of humans in hot regions. The larger skin surface compared to weight allows for body heat to be lost more easily.
Blue eyes are better adapted for vision in regions where there is reduced light, as they let in more light than darker coloured eyes.
Thick lips have a larger surface area to help evaporate moisture and cool the body. The larger surface also allows cooling by moistening of the lips.
Conclusion
Depending on where people are from, they are going to look different. I want to apply this to my characters so that they are as "real" as possible, and feel like real characters therefore people will be more likely to be immersed and interested in the game. I will have varying skin colours depending on where the characters are from. Different hair textures, eye colours and so on. I will refer back to this every now and then to make sure I am sticking to this.
